Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Fr. Martin Anwel Mtumbuka bishop of the new Diocese of Karonga in Malawi.
The message relayed through the Vatican ambassador to Malawi and Zambia, Monsignor Nicola Girasoli was announced today Wednesday July 21, 2010 in Rome.
A press statement by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi said, "The Catholic Church in Malawi has every reason to rejoice for the gift of this new Bishop and for the creation of the new Diocese of Karonga."
"Through his appointment and the creation of the new Diocese, we witness in our midst yet another indication of the growth of the Catholic Church in Malawi, the never-failing providential hand of God and the pastoral care of Jesus Christ the Chief Shepherd," the statement signed by Fr. George Buleya, secretary general of Episcopal Conference of Malawi said.
Fr. Mtumbuka was born on August 5, 1957 in Majimbula Village, in Rumphi District to Anwel Mtumbuka and Wynes Mbale.
He did his primary education in Katizi, Julira, Mhuju and Chilulu schools and his secondary education (1977-1981) at St. Patrick's Minor Seminary in Rumphi District.
Between 1981 and 1988, he accomplished his philosophical studies at St Anthony?s Major Seminary Kachebere and theological studies at St. Peter?s Major Seminary in Zomba.
He was ordained priest on July 31, 1988, at St. Peter's Cathedral, Mzuzu. In 1993-1997 went for further studies at Mater Dei Institute of Education, (Ireland) where he obtained a Master?s Degree in Religious Science.
1997-2002 the newly-appointed bishop studied at Institute of Education, University of London where he obtained a PhD in Education.
Fr. Mtumbuka is currently serving as Deputy-Vice Chancellor at the Catholic University of Malawi.
The new Diocese of Karonga covers Karonga and Chitipa Districts and ecclesiastically covers what was the Northern Deanery of the Diocese of Mzuzu.
