Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi spoke on March 19 and invoked Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus who is considered a saint by Catholic and Orthodox Christians, in reference to the controversial healthcare measure that is due to be voted upon over the March 20-21 weekend.
Speaker Pelosi, a product of Catholic upbringing who has tangled with her bishops over politics and theology, also noted what she characterized as support from some 60 orders of Catholic nuns for the measure that Catholic bishops and numerous pro-life organizations as the most significant advance for elective abortion since the historic 1972 Roe v Wade decision that made abortion legal throughout the United States.
