EU condemns Muslim assaults on Egyptian Christians

Article Tools

The Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) Secretariat has welcomed the adoption by the European Parliament of a resolution condemning recent attacks on Christian communities in Egypt and Malaysia.

According to a press statement, COMECE said that these attacks represent a major infringement of human rights.

The EU urged the Egyptian government to "guarantee that Coptic Christians and members of other religious communities and minorities enjoy the full range of human rights and fundamental freedoms-- including the right to choose and change their religion freely-- and to prevent any discrimination against them."”

COMECE also said that EU should support religious minorities - including Christian communities - who are today being persecuted around the world.

On January 6, this year, six Coptic Christians and a policeman in Egypt were attacked and killed.

75 percent to 85 percent of all the religious persecution in the world is directed towards people of Christian faith and each year 170,000 Christian people lose their lives because of their faith, while the total number of faithful who are brutally persecuted amounts to 200.
