ASTANA -- The trial of Mukhtar Dzhakishev, the former head of Kazakhstan's uranium-producing giant KazAtomProm, has been suspended due to attorney illness, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

The judge in the Sary-Arka district court in Astana postponed today's scheduled session because Dzhakishev lawyer Nurlan Beisekeyev remains in the hospital.

Dzhakishev was arrested in May and charged with corruption and abuse of power.

Several of his colleagues were also arrested and remain in detention.

Dzhakishev has alleged that the case against him is politically motivated.

Dzhakishev's wife, Dzhamilya Dzhakisheva, told RFE/RL that Beisekeyev is currently being treated at a cardiology center.

She said the trial was also postponed last week because Beisekeyev was too sick to attend the session.
