In February 2010 the “first evangelizing cruise ship” will depart on a voyage along the coast of Brazil. The “Grand Celebration”, which has a 1,800 passenger capacity and a crew of 600, will be the “first Catholic cruise ship sailing with Our Lady,” according to local reports.
The cruise ship will go from Santos, near Sao Paulo, and to the Buzios resort near Rio de Janeiro.
The attraction for vacationing Brazilians will be the usual seagoing entertainment. But the featured artist will be Father Fabio de Melo, the biggest selling recording artist in Brazil for 2008. Father Fabio is a priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a popular crooner of songs of hope, faith, and consolation.
Father Fabio has recorded numerous songs and has a weekly television program, having also appeared in live concerts. He offers sermons that emphasize spiritual direction and spiritual healing.
Tickets for the cruise will cost 2404 Brazilian reales, or approximately $1,372. The Catholic cruise will also feature singer-actress Myriam Ríos who will perform, and also lead prayers on board. The package cruise includes complimentary drinks, massage, and hair salon services.
The Archdiocese of Campinas organized the cruise and has invited bishops from elsewhere in Brazil in addition to the papal nuncio, Lorenzo Baldisseri. The papal representative has not yet confirmed his cabin on the Grand Celebration.
Father Fabio was born in 1971 and is a priest, writer, singer, television personality, and professor of theology. He is under the authority of the Diocese of Taubaté. He sold more than 2 million CDs, as well as 500,000 copies of his books. He also has a television program called “Spiritual Direction.”
