Two religious from the institution of the Consolata Missionaries, both natives of Colombia, Sister Ana Elind Gonzalez Lara, 44, and Sister Amelia Gil Diaz, 66, died the morning of December 14, at approximately 7:15am local time in Roraima-Brazil, on the road linking Mucajaí to Boa Vista, in a car accident.
According to information sent to Fides by the Secretary General of the Missionaries of the Consolata, Sister Amelia, who was driving, and Sister Ana were on their way to Boa Vista to attend a meeting for religious men and women. Suddenly, a car coming in the opposite direction entered their lane and hit them straight on, despite the driver's attempt to avoid the collision. Sr. Ana died from severe nerve damage, while Sister Amelia, seriously injured, was transported to Boa Vista, to the intensive care unit, but after passing two cardiac arrests, died as well. Both had been missionaries in the Brazilian Amazon for quite awhile: Sister Ana Gonzalez Lara Elind since 2003 and Sister Amelia Gil Diaz since 1982.
