Terror comes to Michigan football

The University of Michigan is taking no chances with possible terrorism at its 100,000 person capacity football stadium.

Security measures at Michigan Stadium for the University of Michigan were stepped up for the September 26 football game against Big-10 rival University of Indiana. The new measures will continue throughout the balance of the season. In response to heightened concerns over terrorism nationwide, the famed Ann Arbor-based academic institution has decided that no bags of any size will be permitted at games scheduled at its newly remodeled stadium, unless allowed by written permission of a medical professional. The bag prohibition includes purses, lunch sacks, binocular cases, fanny packs and diaper bags.

According to a U-M news release, University of Michigan Department of Public Safety Deputy Chief Charlie Noffsinger, who is the game-day law enforcement incident commander, said "While we have not received information of any specific threats, we have consulted with federal officials and athletics personnel and believe it is appropriate to adjust some of our security protocols for this Saturday. By prohibiting all bags into the stadium, we allow our law enforcement personnel to focus their attention on other security measures in order to ensure a safe environment for all."

Football fans were encouraged to get to their seats early. "We want everyone to be able to see the kick-off, so plan to arrive early," Noffsinger said. "Though we will make every effort to move people through the entrance gates as efficiently as possible, the enhanced security measures probably will cause more delays at the gates."

Patrons planning to attend the game are asked to leave everything at home and bring only their identification and seat tickets or official credentials. Binoculars will be allowed provided they are not in a case and are worn around the owner's neck. Non-pocket seat cushions, cell phones, and clear, sealed water bottles also will be permitted. Any permitted items brought to the stadium are subject to search. Disposable cameras can be brought to the game, so long as they come in a Ziploc plastic baggie.

Michigan’s famed Wolverines under Coach Rich Rodriguez have made 4 wins to 2 losses during this regular season. Terror is expected on the field on October 17 as Michigan goes against ill-favored Delaware State University, as the Wolverines hope to show that their mojo is still intact after losses to Michigan State and Iowa State during the regular season, as well as to Notre Dame before. Barring a terrorist incident, Michigan is expected to defeat Delaware State’s Hornets. But the real terror for Michigan fans will come if their Maize and Blue squad does not manage to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes at the end of the season.
