The Kyrgyz parliament is considering stripping deputy Kubanychbek Kadyrov of his immunity over protests that broke out on election day in July, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Kadyrov has been officially accused by the prosecutor-general of organizing mass disorder in the town of Balykchi during the July 23 voting.

As a parliament member, Kadyrov has immunity and cannot be detained or arrested.

Fourteen Kyrgyz politicians and activists were arrested in Balykchi and charged with publicly calling for the overthrow of the government, organizing a mass disorder, and violent resistance to police.

The lawyers for the accused and opposition activists say the case is politically motivated.

The trial for the 14 defendants is set to start on September 11.

An opposition demonstration is to be held in conjunction with the court proceedings.
