Republicans respond to Obama's Canada visit

Newly minted GOP Chairman Michael Steele called upon President Obama, who is visiting Canada, to reject protectionist moves in the U.S. Congress.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele said in a statement on February 19 concerning President Obama's visit to Canada to meet with Canada's Premier. "After signing a trillion dollar stimulus package with protectionist language, it is important that President Obama clearly communicate America's commitment to global trade. Protectionism is not a solution to our current economic crisis; closing our borders would only lead to fewer jobs and a deeper recession.

"Republicans are eager to work with the President to open new markets to American exporters, create higher paying jobs at home, and build new trade partnerships. During President Obama's first visit to a foreign country, he should reject the protectionist forces in the Democratic Party and reassure the global marketplace that the US is open for business."
