The evidence of breaking of fundamental rules of international humanitarian law is so compelling that I don’t have the slightest doubt on the need for an independent international investigation to show that Israel committed war crimes (…) there are no precedents on trapping an entire population a war zone with no possibility to leave as refugees (…)
So said Richard A. Falk, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, in a press conference on January 23. Falk released a statement regarding the "Cast Lead" military incursion by Israel into the Gaza Strip. He condemned the “Collective punishment - the entire 1.5 million people who live in the crowded Gaza Strip that are being punished for the actions of a few militants; targeting civilians - the airstrikes were aimed at civilian areas in one of the most crowded stretches of land in the world, certainly the most densely populated area of the Middle East; disproportionate military response - the airstrikes have not only destroyed every police and security office of Gaza's elected government, but have killed and injured hundreds of civilians”
